Subject: Coronavirus update

Dear colleagues,

It has come to our attention that a pharmacy student performing a rotation assignment last Thursday at a clinical site might have been in the same location as a patient who has a presumptive positive case of coronavirus.  You can read the news story about the patient here.

Our student returned home to Fort Wayne and self-quarantined. Health officials are in the process of determining whether our student actually had any contact at all with the patient. The student’s roommate, also a pharmacy student, attended class at the Fort Wayne campus on Friday. We also are determining who the student’s roommate may have had contact with at the Fort Wayne campus on Friday.

Out of an abundance of caution, we are arranging for a deep cleaning of the Fort Wayne campus.  At the North Manchester campus, our custodial staff has been using hospital-grade cleaners in residence halls and we will extend those cleaning procedures to buildings across campus.

The All-Colleague Meetings scheduled on both campuses for Tuesday are being postponed so that the leadership team can focus on plans and contingencies related to our ongoing coronavirus response.

To answer questions as they arise, we are establishing an FAQs section of the Medical Alerts page on our website. Questions can be emailed to health@manchester.edu, and we will answer them as promptly and clearly as possible.

As I’m sure you know, this situation is changing rapidly throughout the United States and around the world. Our first priority is to do what we can to keep our University community safe and healthy.

Abby Van Vlerah, vice president for student life, is serving as our point person. We will continue to communicate with you when there is important information to share. We also are sending a separate email regarding this situation to students.

Dave
